It is an area of rugged mountains, with deeply incised gorges, particularly those formed by the Lows, Palmiet and Rooiels rivers. It is extremely rich in montane fynbos (heath) plant species, with a number of endemic, and the usual complement of this vegetation type's animal species, including leopard and klipspringer. As with many mountain catchment areas within the Western and Eastern Cape, Kogelberg was previously under the control of the Division of Forestry, Department of the Environment. A tiny reserve has been set aside to protect a small mainland colony of the jackass penguin, and interested persons should contact the Betty's Bay authority. Location: Extreme south-west; Gordon's Bay/Strand in the north-west; Kleinmond in the south-east.. Access: The R44 skirts the western and southern borders; there are jeep tracks in the reserve, as well as walking trails. The Harold Porter Botanic Reserve at Betty's Bay is located on the reserve's southern border and has a number of short trails. Contact the authority for detailed access information. Accommodation: Nothing within the reserve, but as the coastal area is a prime holiday destination there are numerous options in fringing areas. Other facilities: None, although river pools are good for a cooling-off on hot summer days; access to tourist amenities along coast. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset. |
